In order to start our scientific investigation on household materials, we'll need to make a pH indicator using simple and attainable materials. In labs, methyl orange is often used as reliable pH indicator. Here, we will make a homemade substitute that works.
Materials
- 200ml of Water
- 10 Blueberries
- Cup/Container
- Filter (not shown in photo)
- Pot & Stove
- Bowl
- Mashing/Grinding Utensil
Step 1: Mash 10 blueberries in the bowl
Step 2: Add mashed blueberry contents into a pot
Step 3: Add 200ml of water into the pot
Step 4: Boil the water and blueberry mixture
Step 5: Filter the blueberry skin from the solution by pouring the solution into a cup9or a container) with a filter on top.
With the blueberry juice as an indicator, here is a picture to help us better estimate the pH of a substance based on the colour the blueberry indicator gives off.
